A report text is a type of text that announce the result of an investigation or annouce something. The information given in a report text is very general information.

PURPOSE

 Social function of report text is to present information about something generally to the reader. They generally describe an entire class of things, whether natural or made: mammals, plants, and natural phenomenon. (Tujuan report text adalah untuk menyampaikan informasi hasil pengamatan dan analisa yang sistematis. Informasi yang dijelaskan dalam report text biasanya bersifat umum, baik itu alamiah ataupun buatan seperti hand phone binatang mamalia, tumbuh-tumbuhan, dan peristiwa alam)

 1. General Classification: General statements that describe the subject of the report, description, and classification.

2.Description: tells what the phenomenon under discussion ; in terms of parts,

qualities, habits or behaviors.

LANGUAGE FEATURE OF REPORT TEXT :

1. Nouns and noun phrases are used rather than personal pronouns. The use of personal pronouns is limited.

2. Most reports are written in the simple present tense.

Tenses itu merupakan perubahan bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan waktu terjadinya suatu peristiwa atau keadaan. 

Simple present tense adalah kalimat dengan pola bentuk kata kerja yang menyatakan kejadian yang berlangsung di masa sekarang atau kejadian yang berulang ulang setiap hari.

3. Some reports use technical or scientific terms.

A technical term is a word, phrase or acronym that professionals use in their specific field to help save time when communicating with other knowledgeable professionals. These terms can develop and become abbreviated as the phrases become more common.

4. Linking verbs are used, eg. is, are, has, have, belong to, to give coherence.

Linking Verb adalah jenis kata kerja penghubung yang menghubungkan subjek dengan complement (pelengkap) yang menerangkannya, bisa noun complement atau adjective complement dan sering digunakan untuk menggantikan to be dan punya keterkaitan dengan sesuatu yang berhubungan dengan panca indra

5. Uses some action verbs (climb, eat).

Action verb adalah kata kerja, seperti berlari, berpikir, atau menenangkan, yang mengekspresikan sesuatu yang dilakukan seseorang, hewan, benda, atau proses di alam.

Run= berlari, Think = berfikir

6.Descriptive language is used that is factual rather than imaginative eg. color, shape, size, body parts, habits, behaviors, functions, uses.

The differences between report text and descriptive text

Mostly, report is written after getting careful observation. This scientific and technical sense make clearer difference from descriptive text. The way of descriptive text in showing thing is based on the objective fact of the thing. It describe the specific thing simply as the thing is.

REPORT vs DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

Some text types are quite difficult to differ. Such report and descriptive text have the similarity in the social function and generic structure. However if they are analyzed carefully, the slight difference between the two text types will reveal.

The purpose of the two texts are to give the live-description of the object/participant. Both the report and descriptive text try to show rather than tell the reader about the factual condition of the object. Readers by themselves will catch the impressive point of the object through that showing writing style. What make different, between report and descriptive text, is the scope of the written object. If we talk about, eg: bicycle, it belongs to report text. It will talk about bicycle in general; its parts, physical strengh, function for certain people or other general characters of bike. In the other hand, descriptive text will convey more focus, for example "my bicycle" with its specific characters; colour, lengh, wheel style, etc.

In short, report text describes the way of certain things and frequently refer to phenomenon of nature, animal and scientific object. Mostly, report is written after getting careful observation. This scientific and technical sense make clearer difference from descriptive text. The way of descriptive text in showing thing is based on the objective fact of the thing. It describe the specific thing simply as the thing is.

• If the thing which is described in the text just the representative of the whole group of the thing mentioned, we can judge it as Report Text.
•  The structure of Report Text is General Clasification followed by Description. 
• Description Text is describing a particular living, non-living or natural phenomenon.
•  If the thing which is mentioned in the text is clear about its name, we can make it sure as Descriptive Text.
• The structure of Description Text is Identification followed by Description
